Measure your hedge for a clear quote
You do not need an architectural drawing. The main thing is to describe the right hedge, use consistent units and show what makes your property different. Start by walking around it from accessible places on the ground.

One side of the yard, one section
Separate the hedge into sections: the left side, the back and the right side of the yard, for example. If two sections have different heights or need different work, keep that distinction in your notes.
For example: 12 m on the left, 8 m at the back and 5 m on the right. That adds up to 25 m in total. Writing down all three measurements also shows where each section begins and ends; a single total tells less of the story.
Use the same unit throughout
Write the unit beside every number. Twelve feet and twelve metres do not describe the same yard. If your measuring tape has both, choose one scale for the entire measurement, then check which unit the form asks for.
Do not double the length simply because you want both faces trimmed. The hedge’s length and the sides to be worked on are two separate pieces of information. Describe the relevant faces alongside your measurements.
Separate the current height from your target height
Maintaining a 3 m hedge at its current height is not the same request as lowering a 3 m hedge. Note both heights if you want a reduction, and say whether the figures are estimates.
Do not climb to get an exact measurement. A clearly labelled estimate with a photo taken from the ground is better than a measurement taken from an unsafe position. The network can ask for clarification if needed.
Include anything that affects access
Mention wires, the pool, fences, the shed and narrow passages. If wires are present, observe only from the ground and keep at least three metres away, including any measuring instruments. Hydro-Québec’s questionnaire explains the precautions to take before working near the electrical network.

- Current height and desired result.
- Faces of the hedge to be trimmed.
- Obstacles, access and nearby wires.
