Your hedge is too wide. How far can it be cut back?
The walkway is getting narrower, the hedge is touching the shed and you would like to reclaim two feet. The space you want back does not tell you how much the cedars can lose. That second question needs an answer before cutting begins.

The foliage sets the limit
A cedar does not respond like a fence you can simply move back. Conifers have difficulty producing new shoots on old wood. A cut that exposes the bare interior can leave a lasting brown patch; no one can promise that a green screen will return.
The Botanical Garden distinguishes species that can tolerate heavier pruning, including yew and hemlock. An approach that suits one species is not automatically a good solution for a thuja hedge.

Measure the space you need, not the depth of the cut
For example, your passage is 60 cm wide and you would like to move a wheelbarrow through it more easily. Share that width and how you want to use the space. The trimmer can then assess whether size-control trimming is enough or whether your goal calls for another change to the yard.
Look at both sides from an accessible spot. A hedge may look full from the yard but be bare behind the shed. One front photo does not show that difference.
- Photograph the length and the side you want trimmed back.
- Identify the obstacle: fence, pool, shed or passage.
- Specify the height and width you want to keep.
- Mention any previous major cut or existing brown patch.
Three goals, three different discussions
If you mainly want to remove growth since the last trim, ask for maintenance. If you want to reduce how much space the hedge takes up, discuss size control. If you are considering a substantial height reduction, explain it clearly from the start.
Terms like ‘rejuvenation’ or ‘heavy pruning’ do not guarantee regrowth. Depending on the hedge’s condition, a gradual approach may be suggested, but it does not make every depth of cut possible.
A good cut preserves what matters to you
Before deciding, rank your priorities: keeping your privacy, opening up the passage, preserving the existing hedge or changing its shape. Some expectations can conflict. A reduction that frees up a lot of space may also open the view onto your neighbour’s property.
